Agency Description:

The first non-profit outpatient mental health clinic in Los Angeles County, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services was founded to help adults cope with the effects of the Great Depression. Over the years, we have evolved in response to the needs of our increasingly complex community.

Through the leadership and generosity of Didi and I. Kingdon Hirsch, in 1974 we became one of the first federally approved community mental health centers in greater Los Angeles. With this designation came a commitment to offer community education, clinic-based treatment and residential care to people of all ages. We subsequently were renamed to honor Didi Hirsch’s leadership in this expansion.

With almost 70 years of experience, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services provides mental health support, substance abuse treatment and suicide prevention. Each year, Didi Hirsch helps over 70,000 children, adults, older adults and families wherever they are needed – at our 11 centers, in more than 60 schools, from Pacoima to Los Angeles to Orange County and points in between.

We offer a wide range of services through five divisions - Adult Services, Child and Family Services, Substance Abuse Services, Suicide Prevention and Training. Services include crisis intervention and stabilization, counseling, residential treatment, case management, youth-at-risk and family reinforcement programs, delinquency prevention programs, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and extensive community outreach. As a member of the Lifeline Network, we also operate the only free, accredited, 24-hour, seven-days-a-week, suicide prevention crisis line from Orange County to Santa Barbara.

Program Description:

We provide specialized services for adults with serious mental illnesses, which have led to frequent hospitalizations or homelessness. Staff members work with clients in community settings such as work, home, hospitals, and courts to help them remain in the community, reduce their symptoms, and improve their quality of life. Staff members have small caseloads to ensure individualized attention. Services are provided daily if needed. Staff help clients with a variety of issues including obtaining transportation, medication and primary health care, educational or employment opportunities, and financial or health benefits.Programs at our headquarters and Inglewood Center provide outpatient mental health services to adults with serious mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression. Our trained mental health staff provides individual and group therapy, case management, and psychiatric medication management. Outpatient mental health services are also available to children and youth experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, abuse, delinquency, and/or other issues. Our trained mental health staff provides individual, group, and family therapy, as well as case management and medication management.

To make the process of obtaining care as simple as possible for severely mentally ill clients, we offer Drop-in Centers at our Inglewood site. At the Drop-in Center, individuals can receive a mental health assessment, help with access to services, group counseling, prepared lunches, peer support, and more. The program also partners with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, whose peer advocates are onsite providing peer support and serving as mentors.

Our Drop-in Center also houses 2 psychosocial Wellness Centers. They provides support, social opportunities, and skill building activities for adults with chronic mental illnesses. Members can participate in group activities that help to reduce feelings of isolation, take a variety of computer classes, and contribute to a Clubhouse newsletter. The Clubhouses are self-governing, but guided by staff members, who also offer therapy groups.

We provide immediate short-term counseling for individuals and families experiencing a crisis following a life-changing event, such as the death of a loved one, loss of a job, assault, or life-threatening illness. We also provide short-term counseling for those overcome with thoughts, feelings, or habits that were once manageable and now seem out of control. These thoughts or feelings can range from excessive worry, to phobias, to an inability to cope with a loss.
