LA County Receives Nearly $105 Million in HUD Funds to Prevent and End Homelessness

Los Angeles, CA (December 21, 2016) –  The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development this week awarded the Los Angeles City and County Continuum of Care (CoC) nearly $105 million in renewed and new grants to prevent and end homelessness. The figure represents the largest single award the LA CoC has ever received from HUD.

The funds are part of a record $1.95 billion that the Obama Administration awarded to 7,600 homeless assistance programs around the nation.

The new funding to LA County includes $2.6 million for direct services, with two awards granted to the Housing Authority City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and two to the Housing Authority County of Los Angeles (HACoLA). The projects will be operated by St. Joseph Center, Alcott Center for Mental Health Services, Union Station Homeless Services, and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and provide an additional 152 units of permanent supportive housing. The announcement also includes two new awards to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), expanding local capacity to combat homelessness. LAHSA has been granted $1.25 million to support CoC planning efforts and $500,000 to enhance the local homeless management information system (HMIS).

“This year’s award demonstrates that HUD supports our work,” said Peter Lynn, Executive Director of LAHSA. “These funds will assist our community as we continue to find permanent housing for people experiencing homelessness.”
